Sloppy Joe’s

You know what’s the worst? Admitting that all of my best recipes are the ones that my hubby suggested. Last week, the enchiladas were his idea, and they turned out so yummy. This week, he wanted sloppy joe’s.  Is it sloppy Joe’s or sloppy Joes.  Plural or possessive? Who can be sure. I probably won’t write it the same way twice anyway.

I will give him the credit he deserves though, because it has been a really long time since I have had a sloppy joe and there is something so comforting about them. Does anyone else remember the sloppy joe scene from “It Takes Two”? (Oh, you haven’t heard of it? It’s an Olson twin classic). I think of that movie every time I eat sloppy joe’s.

I remember, my mom made the best sloppy joe’s when I was a kid. I loved them!  And I also remember eating sloppy joes out of a can before I started cooking the food we eat.  Uck. It is appalling how many things we used to eat out of cans.  Why did we ever think that eating a “meal” out of a can was a good idea?  The only time that will ever happen again is during the zombie apocalypse. Until then, I think I’ll stick to re-making the canned favorites out of real, healthy ingredients.

These Sloppy Joe’s are hearty, healthy and super easy to make.  The 3 most important qualities for a successful food prep!


Sloppy Joe’s (Does that apostrophe belong there?)

What You Need

1lb ground beef

1lb ground sirloin (or another lb ground beef)

8oz can organic tomato sauce

6oz can organic tomato paste

½ cup organic ketchup

½ white onion, diced

1 red bell pepper, diced

4oz can diced green chiles

1 ½ tbs Worcestershire sauce

½ tbs gluten free soy sauce

½ tsp coconut sugar (optional)

½ tbs spicy brown mustard

½ tbs yellow mustard

2 tsp sea salt

2 tsp black pepper

1 ½ tsp paprika

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder


For Garnish

Hamburger buns or Kaiser roll **

Sliced red onion

Dill pickle chips

What to Do

  1. Brown ground beef and ground sirloin in 1 tbs olive oil.
  2. When cooked halfway add onions, green chiles and seasonings
  3. Once meat is fully cooked, add all other ingredients and mix well.
  4. Turn heat down to low and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  5. Assemble your sloppy jose. *It will be hot. Despite how tempting it is to take a big ole bite right away, do not do what my husband did. The rest of your Joe won’t taste very good after you have burnt off all of your taste buds.

The bones of this recipe are gluten free (provided that you check your ingredients) but obviously, a Kaiser roll is not. This would be delish eaten sans bun or you can do an open faced sandwich on gluten free bread, or find yourself some edible gluten free hamburger buns. If you have had a gluten free hamburger bun, you know they are not all edible. Amiright?
