Today on the Tread

I switched up the scenery today. Usually I work out at the gym upstairs in our apartment building. (I say usually as if I have been doing it for years, nope it is a new habit!) Being a one car family and having a dentist appointment this morning, meant that I had to pick up my husband from work. This gave me the opportunity to hop on the treadmill in the gym he works for, Bodies by Burgoon in Northeast Minneapolis. This gym is my husband’s second home and the people in it, his second family. I welcome every opportunity that I get to be here and know these people a little bit more.

When I run on the treadmill at home, I watch TV – mostly to distract from the pain in my legs and lungs when I am running. If someone is on the “good treadmill” aka the one that looks at the TV, then I am stuck on the treadmill that faces the mirror. Have you ever ran in front of a mirror? With every stride I can see exactly what my body looks like in movement, exactly how red my face gets when I exercise, and quickly my hair goes from straight to curly when I sweat. Needless to say, I dread ending up on that treadmill.

Today, I entered Bodies by Burgoon, a gym that contains NO TVS and NO MIRRORS! At first I wondered how I was going to make it through the 45 minute cardio session. But instead, I got to be alone with my thoughts and my music and focus on running. I could almost feel all of the stress from this week leaving my body. I also got to look at the things that do fill the gym; trophies from hardwork paid off, pictures of the team mid action and motivational quotes. One that I put my focus on when running was on that big beautiful bold phrase “STRONG IS BEAUTIFUL.”

I got to the gym late because as usual, I couldn’t get out of work on time. Story of my life. So, I didn’t have as much time to work out as I wanted. I hopped on and before I knew it, I was 2.5 miles in. The hubby had just finished up his training session and was urging me to get ready to go. I told myself when I first pressed “quick start,” that if I could get at least 2.5 miles in, I would be good until Saturday’s cardio. Something hit me when I got to 2.5 miles. Cheesy as it sounds, at that moment I felt the motivation, 2.5 wasn’t going to be good enough for me. So I turned on Chandelier by Sia and turned up the speed to 6 and crossed 3 miles.

Each day I am feeling better, healthier, happier. We are almost 3 weeks into our paleo routine and bit by bit, I am finding ways to keep being healthier. If I can keep this up, I might actually feel good before, during, AND after next summers 5ks.

Can’t wait!
